Regionally, there are many stereotypes regarding American Indians. Most people have an opinion regarding the people, their reservations and the casinos that they own. However, Native Americans were the first group of people to call America their home. After all, it was the Native Americans who helped the Europeans settle and survive in the new World.
Besides the contributions that are commonly recognized, such as farming and agriculture practices, the Native American’s value system continues to be a major contribution. Values such as respect for the Earth and respect for fellow man are core values that American’s continue to strive for. They also practice peace and generosity by not engaging in any major wars, taking drugs or drinking alcohol and not allowing any complete annihilation weapons, such as bombs. While Americans actively participate in many of the destructive activities that Native Americans do not believe in, they may often participate knowing that it is not good or the right thing to do.
Native American’s have made many contributions to the American life. Without them, settlers may not have ever survived in the New World of America. Of their many contributions, the idea of a simpler life may be the most significant. Native American’s practiced a lifestyle of peace, goodwill and respect for each other and the environment. When other settlers came to America they brought their own practices and beliefs, but we should never forget the foundation of values that the Native Americans first set.
