From the moment she first saw them in the window display at her favorite store Abby knew that she had to own them. You see, Abby is a self proclaimed shoeaholic, shoes complete her. When she saw the leopard print, four inch stilettos she knew instantly that they would be her new “date” this weekend.
Five days ago, Abby’s boyfriend of two and a half years recited the ever-so-famous line of “it’s not you, it’s me.” It was him alright! She found out only hours later that he’d been seeing a mutual friend of theirs for the last several months and that he would be taking her on a trip to Europe in a few weeks; thus, it was time for him to break of his relationship with Abby. What’s a girl to do when she’s confronted with such horrible, life changing news? Go shopping of course!
That’s when Abby saw them. Without a moment’s notice she walked right into the store and as quickly as the clerk could ask if she needed any help she blurted out “the leopard prints in the window, size 8.” There was no need to try them on, she knew they’d be a perfect fit. She just whipped out her wallet, gave the clerk her credit card and said “credit!” Abby never looked at the final price as she scribbled a signature grabbed her bag and strutted out the door feeling like a million dollars with her new shoes.
Friday night came, the night of her big debut. Not only did Abby have fabulous new shoes to wear with her breathtaking little black dress, but she was also now a single woman. She set off to her favorite bar with her two best friends, only to find out that she wasn’t the only one who’d intended on spending an evening there.
She and her friends strutted in, found a seat at the bar, ordered a cocktail and began to scan the bar for some cute guys. Cute guys, they found a few; Abby’s old guy, they found him too! Although, immediately a rush of emotions overwhelmed her, Abby was instantly calm and confident as she remembered that she was “lookin’ good in her new shoes”.
A few cocktails in, Abby and her friends had convinced her to strut by her old flame’s table on her way to talk to a cute guy across the room. Abby agreed and started across the bar. She was about five feet from his table when she slipped on a spill on the floor and fell. The entire bar got quiet for a moment as everyone stopped and stared at her until his new girlfriend began laughing obnoxiously.
Abby survived both the embarrassment of that night, as well as the broken ankle that he received as a result of her unfortunate accident. What hadn’t survived the night were her shoes. Not only had the heal completely broken off of the left shoe, but both were terribly stained from whatever had been spilled on the floor.
Two weeks later Abby sat down and began to open her mail. She’d been dreading receiving the hospital bill from her broken ankle. What she hadn’t expected was the balance on her credit card. What had she brought for $1,200?
